Jackie, a mother of three embodies the essence of photographers in New York City. 

I met her at a photography company, and we instantly became friends because we had so much in common. We both grew up in New York City, though we lived in Florida before moving back to the Big Apple—she spent 6 years there, and I was there on and off for about 5 years. We also share Ecuadorian heritage. What I admire most about Jackie is her unwavering dedication to creative projects; she always finds a way to make time for her passion, and it’s truly inspiring. Additionally, her ability to capture people as they truly are is remarkable, making her a standout among other photographers in NYC. As someone who has been photographed by her, I can attest to her talent in making her subjects feel comfortable in front of the camera while allowing them to be themselves, a must-have skill for NYC portrait photoshoots. She has a way of bringing out expressions in people that they didn’t even know they had.

We constantly go out to photograph, explore new places, and experiment with new lenses and lighting—all throughout the seasons here in NYC, from winter to summer! What inspired you to start taking pictures, and who or what motivated you initially?

My family was my initial inspiration for picking up a camera. I had a special bond with my grandfather, and as he neared the end of his life, I felt compelled to capture moments with him through photography. It was a way to immortalize his essence and keep his memory alive long after he was gone. This deeply personal motivation fueled my passion for photography from the very beginning, and it continues to drive me to this day.

Do you recall your first camera and the story behind how you got it?

My first camera was actually a loaner from my high school. I studied photography for all four years, and my teacher, Roy Reid, taught me the basics. That loaner camera became the starting point for my journey in photography, and I’m so grateful for that time in my life.

Your journey reflects strength, confidence, and independence, especially in balancing motherhood with your photography. Was this mindset always part of your approach, or did it develop over time?

Thank you, I love this question. Balancing motherhood and my photography journey has shaped my mindset over time. Photography fuels my passion, giving me strength and confidence. I encourage my kids to find their passions too, knowing that pouring into themselves brings fulfillment and confidence.

What factors do you believe contributed to the development of your strong and independent mindset, especially in managing the intersection of motherhood and your photography career?

Being a mom to three kiddos and juggling my photography career has definitely toughened up my mindset. I’ve learned to roll with the punches, multitask like a pro, and set some serious boundaries. Pursuing photography has given me an outlet for my creativity and independence outside of just being a mom. It’s taught me to prioritize self-care and manage my time like a boss. So yeah, between mom life and snapping pics, I’ve become pretty resilient and confident in handling whatever life throws my way.

Could you walk us through your approach when photographing a subject?

When I’m photographing someone, making them feel comfy is key. I start by greeting them warmly and chatting to build a connection. During the shoot, I give clear directions while staying open to their ideas. Confidence is key – it helps them relax and trust the process. I pay attention to their cues and adjust accordingly, making sure they feel heard and valued. It’s all about creating a chill vibe where they can be themselves and shine in front of the camera!

For moms aspiring to be creative, what advice do you have for finding inspiration in a bustling city while balancing family life?

For moms wanting to get creative in NYC while juggling family life, knowing and loving the city is key. My advice? Dive into the city! Take time to explore, involve your family in your creative adventures, connect with fellow creatives. It’s all about finding inspiration in the beautiful chaos of city life while keeping that balance with your loved ones. You got this!

Have you collaborated with fellow creators in NYC, and how did these collaborations shape your creative journey?

Hanging with you, Caroline, has really opened up my world, especially in this city. Collaborating with other creators in NYC has been a game changer for me. It’s like a constant flow of fresh ideas and inspiration. Working together pushes me to think differently and grow creatively. Plus, it’s just awesome to bounce ideas off each other and see what magic we can create. Collaborations have definitely shaped my journey, opening up new opportunities and connections I never would’ve found on my own. It’s all about that creative synergy!

Can you share a specific moment that encapsulates your roles as a mom, and creator in the dynamic setting of New York City?

One evening, my family and I were walking along the High Line in NYC. With laughter and love filling the air, I snapped some beautiful photos against the city skyline. It was a moment that reminded me of the joy of being a mom, wife, and creator all at once. I used my skill to prepare something we could cherish forever.

Lastly, have any of your kids shown an interest in photography?

Definitely! My oldest got into photography, so I gave him my first DSLR for Christmas. Now, he’s using it for his yearbook club, which is awesome. As for my other kids, they’ve dabbled in it too, they love to model. It’s cool seeing them explore their creative side!
